Improving Career Mobility

After creating a solid foundation for Degreed’s LXP environment by shipping the redesign of the Learner Home, my PM and I were asked to roll out and enhance multiple features for Degreed's Career Mobility (DCM) suite.

Users weren’t able to discover new resources swiftly and continue easily with the learning they had started, upon returning to Degreed. The latter was of great importance as we were preparing to enter the Career Mobility market, where developing upon current, and building new skills would be extremely crucial.

I led the design as part of the Learner Home Team. Over the course of a year I researched, designed, prototyped and tested the new experience, while also creating a set of new components to enable Degreed to scale-up to the next stage.

Create an opportunity marketplace

The main goal for this project was to bridge the gap between the current skill development of an employee and the employer’s database of career opportunities, as we didn’t have a personalized solution in place yet.

In order to meet the criteria we did a preliminary competitor analysis after which we concluded that Browse should be replaced by a Marketplace page similar to home. This enabled us to provide users with personalized opportunities based on their preferences such as focus skills, learning history, users followings and opportunity interests.

We also took the opportunity to ship a simple MVP that connected mentors to mentees, with the notion of adding additional functionality later on if feedback was positive.

Building out mentoring

During our bi-weekly interviews with clients and occasionally with end-users, we received a growing interest in mentoring and decided to further improve and enhance this feature.

The objective was to help mentors develop their leadership and coaching skills, while mentees could achieve their learning goals more efficiently and effectively by learning from experienced mentors.

To establish a solid foundation and a focused experience we created a dedicated page to further improve mentoring functionality. I designed the end-to-end experience, from connecting with a mentee or mentor to reviewing a completed mentorship.

Because of the complex nature of mentoring as a process we made the decision to start with the connection and evaluation phase. This meant that the actual mentoring would be done outside of Degreed. This aligned well with our main principle to create a simple and straightforward connection experience.

Re-structure Opportunity Browse

Historically DCM browse had always functioned as a repository for all internal opportunities within an organization, and was therefore mainly designed to manage opportunities.

This resulted in an unilateral experience where users who were exploring and comparing opportunities had a hard time completing their task, due to a lacking layout design and a poor redirecting flow.

By validating different layouts we concluded that a split-view approach would ensure the best solution for quick switching between results without having to leave the results page.
